Tendons made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) offer a true alternative to conventionel high strength steel tendons, because of their excellent mechanical properties, namely corrosion resistance, high tensile strength in fiber direction, low weight and excellent fatigue behaviour. However, the outstanding strength of CFRP is only pronounced in axial direction. In the transverse direction the strength is much lower. The development of an efficient anchorage for prestressed CFRP-elements is rather difficult, because of the anisotropic properties of the CFRP and an optimized ratio between lateral compression and interlaminar shear strength is of utmost importance.
The segmented casting anchorage presented in this thesis has a unique geometry to meet the necessary performence requirements. Numerical and experimental investigations on the segmented casting anchorage have shown that a high efficiency in terms of anchorage performance could be reached. The efficiency is defined as the percentage of ultimate tensile load reached in the tensile tests versus the nominal load (calculated using the strength guaranteed by the manufacturer), which is 105 - 110 % for anchorages that are designed for 19 and 37 wires and approx. 86 % for anchorages with 84 wires. For the determination of the anchorage geometry general construction guidelines as well as critical stress conditions are presented. Furthermore, the mechanical and thermal properties of the main anchorage materials, i.e. CFRP for the tensile member and epoxy resin for the casting element, are studied in detail and the main influence factors were determined.
The behaviour of the segmented casting anchorage under permanent as well as temperature loading was also analysed. Long-term tests with high initial loading showed that the relatively low loss of prestressing is caused by relaxation of the CFRP-wire and creep of the epoxy resin. With FE analysis the influence on the bearing capacity and serviceability due to an increase of lateral pressure and loss of prestressing caused by increasing or decreasing the temperature were determined.
The first application of prestressed CFRP-tendons, which are equipped with the new anchorage system, is the bridge over the highway in Golling, which is located in the province of Salzburg, Austria. It was also the first time that CFRP-tendons were used in Austria. For strengthening purposes 16 external prestressed tendons each consisting of 37 CFRP-wires with a length of about 39 metres were successfully installed.
