dc.description.abstract
In my dissertation I deal with cooperative traffic telematics for vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The IEEE 802.11p standard is an extension of the IEEE 802.11 standard for providing wireless access in vehicular environments. The medium access delay is an issue, especially when many nodes are connected to the same ad-hoc networks. The delay of a vehicle increases unpredictably every time the channel is sensed busy.
First, I am evaluating the default MAC protocol for regulated safety-relevant notifications. I examine one of the MAC layer enhancements to ensure the reliability for prioritized transmission. It was previously known that the self-organized time division multiple access (SoTDMA) is more reliable than the 802.11p MAC protocol. In situations where security-related data is present, more than 85% of the safety notifications need to be correctly decoded.
My simulations show that at high vehicle density, a congestion regulation is necessary. In such situations SoTDMA outperforms the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA). However, the objective of 90% correctly decoded safety alerts is not reached. The ETSI proposal for variable notification rate notification affects negatively to the SoTDMA performance. This implies that any change in the notification rate, is translated to a listening to an entire frame while dropping of notifications. Even if only CAM/BSM-security-notifications are used, a congestion control is required. This leads to a decentralized multi-state congestion control (multi-state-active DCC).
