Die Unternehmen im deutschsprachigen Raum in Europa gelten als zuverlässig und stabil. Ob dies auch mit einer stabilen Unternehmensführung zusammenhängt, wird in dieser Arbeit untersucht. Betrachtet werden die jeweils 10 größten, börsennotierten Unternehmen in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz und als Betrachtungszeitraum wurden die Jahre 2000 bis 2012 herangezogen. Verglichen wurden die Ergebnisse mit Studien, die auf internationaler Ebene Unternehmen und deren Vorstandsvorsitzende, deren Verweildauer oder die Häufigkeit der Auswechslung des CEOs untersuchen. Neben der Analyse der Ergebnisse wurde auch auf die Strukturen an der Unternehmensspitze, die Zusammenhänge mit der Prinzipal-Agent-Theorie und auch die Kriterien für die Erfolgsmessung und die damit zusammenhängende Entlohnung betrachtet. Ein Vergleich der Corporate Governance Richtlinien der drei betrachteten Länder und die Einbindung dieser Richtlinien in den einzelnen Ländern rundet die Untersuchung der Verweildauer von Vorstandsvorsitzenden in diesen Ländern ab.
