Taylor, C. (2008).
Thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) are physical phenomena which can be used to determine the age of a variety of mineral samples. Materials within the sample (for example quartz or feldspar) continually store the energy of naturally occurring ionizing radiation. Thermal or optical stimulation causes this energy to be released in the form of light. The accumulated dose can be calculated from the intensity of the emitted light by measuring the light emission caused by artificial irradiation with a known dose. If the annual dose of the radiation occurring within and in the vicinity of the sample is known as well, the elapsed time since the last thermal or optical stimulation can be determined.
The goal of this thesis was to develop the procedures necessary to determine the age of given samples using a newly designed device for OSL measurement. To this end, several samples from Upper Austria were analyzed using both thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence. The overall results obtained by these two methods then were compared and contrasted. The analyzed samples consisted of a brick of known age from the commune of Alkoven, five samples from the so-called Ziegelroit near Geboltskirchen, and two ceramic samples from Oberleim.
The results demonstrate that despite the disadvantages OSL shows with respect to TL in certain areas, the age of samples can be determined with comparable accuracy.
