This study investigates the impact of component-driven development approaches on developer socialization in large-scale software development projects. The research was performed as a single case study in a large-scale software development project of a world-wide operating electronics manufacturer and service provider. The developers of this project were asked to complete a questionnaire, that recorded the individual perceptions regarding the socialization processes in this environment. The research particularly focuses on how component-based software development approaches shape the structure of workgroups and influence the selection of socialization tactics that can be applied by management. Furthermore the study presents evidence on the positive effects of component-based development on developer team socialization. The findings indicate the potential of component-based approaches as a tool for rapid developer socialization and outlines proposals for further research on this topic.
