Abstract:

The subject of this master thesis is the Central Bath in Sofia, the capitalcity of Bulgaria. The bath first opened in 1913, but has been out of service since 1986, due to need of redevelopment. The future of the building is sofar still unclear. A long and controversial discussion to determine whether or not the building should be reinstated as a public bath is yet to reach any consensus. As of the writing of this thesis, part of the building has been redeveloped to host the Sofia history museum. The rest however is in danger of collapsing and is temporarily used as a warehouse. The first chapter of this thesis introduces the history of Sofia and the local mineral water spring. Chapter two discusses the construction history and architectural values of the Central Bath. The following third chapter outlines the events after the bath ceased its public service and presents the current state of the building. The last chapter evaluates the current state of affairs and the ongoing discussion for the future of the Central Bath.
