Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the design of a visitor center for the Northern Black Forest. The Black Forest is Germany’s highest and largest low mountain range and with the Northern Black Forest it forms the largest contiguous forest area in Baden-Württemberg. As a conversion of a formerly industrially used and thus man-made “injured flank” of the mountain, the design is located in the disused porphyry quarry Edelfrauengrab in Ottenhöfen im Schwarzwald. In direct contrast to the fir forest that begins at the highest breakline, the building deals with the search for its own identity on the steep slope and detachment from vernacular architecture. A visitor- and information center and the national park administration are to be established as a central contact point in the immediate vicinity of the Karlsruher Grad rock massif. The tasks of such a type are to be explained and developed step by step in the process with references for stand-alone architecture, in interaction with raw rock.
