Hollow inorganic spheres, having diameters in the nanometer to mid-micrometer range, have a number of interesting application possibilities. Templates are used for the most important preparation methods. They are removed after deposition of the shell material onto their surface. This can be „hard“ templates, such as SiO2, carbon or polymer spheres, or „soft“ templates, such as liquid droplets (emulsions, aerosols) or gas bubbles. In addition, methods are available which utilize diffusion of matter from the center of a particle to its outside.
