Abstract:

The present work gives a detailed investigation of the possible integration of biomass gasification using the sorption enhanced reforming process into an integrated metallurgical facility for the iron and steel production. The additional implementation of the power-to-gas technology provides the opportunity of generating hydrogen, based on renewable energies, including the methanation process, which can be further used as chemical energy storage. The background of this work is the reduction of greenhouse gases, or rather carbon dioxide, and the application of renewable energies into one of the most energy intensive industry sectors worldwide. First of all, a detailed research of literature of the considered technologies was carried out. Furthermore, a process design, based on an existing layout of a sorption enhanced reforming plant was defined, concerning the following areas: • Enhanced gas cleaning unit before the methanation process, • Fluidized bed methanation, • Electrolysis of water, • Inclusion of a gas separation unit to capture the carbon dioxide emissions that arise in the iron and steel industry and are primarily present in the so- called blast furnace gases. To quantify the resulting energy and mass flows, a flow sheet of the whole plant was carried out and a process simulation was realized, using the software IPSEpro. The implemented scenario considers the substitution of the demand of natural gas of an integrated metallurgical plant, by producing synthetic natural gas, using the methanation of carbon dioxide. The steam gasification of biomass is carried out in a dual fluidized bed system, applying the sorption enhanced reforming process combined with an oxyfuel combustion. The exhaust gas stream of the gasification system and the blast furnace gases are used as a source of carbon dioxide. The demanded hydrogen for the methanation is produced via polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis of water. It is added in a stoichiometrical ratio of four to one to the molar amount of carbon dioxide before the methanation process. The product gas of the gasification process is purified in a primary gas cleaning unit and then can be sent to the integrated metallurgical facility, to be used as a reduction gas. The simulation results show that the production of 100 MW reduction gas and 385 MW synthetic natural gas with a methane content > 95 vol.%, requires an input of 132 MW woodchips as a fuel for the gasification process and 585 MW electrical energy for the electrolysis of water. The overall process efficiency can be calculated to 68 %.
