dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
Magnetic bearings provide an alternative to mechanical and fluid film bearings. One of the main advantages is that the mechanical properties (for example the spring and the damping coefficients) can be influenced. But active magnetic bearings are unstable systems and therefore a control structure is needed to stabilize them. This type of bearings are usually applied to systems where the classical bearings cannot be used because of their limitations. For example, this is the case for applications, where no fluids are allowed to be used. New investigations in semiconductor technologies allows to implement more and more complex and optimal control structures for stabilization of the active magnetic bearings. Therefore this work deals with the control of active magnetic bearings which stabilizes an under critical rotor. In order to develop a stabilizing control structure for the existing magnetic bearing system, the basics of rigid bodies and of rigid rotors are explained first. Based on this knowledge the differential equations of the active magnetic bearings are established, and their physical effects explained. In the next section a control structure to stabilize the rigid rotor is developed. Because only the consideration of the rigid rotor is not enough for practical applications, the next section deals with the fundamentals of flexible rotors. Usually it is not possible to model the flexible rotor analytically and therefore the Finite Element Method is used. With this basics a control structure from the rigid body is extended to a flexible rotor. The control design process is structured into three steps. First the identification of the mechanical properties is required. With this knowledge a position controller is developed and the last part deals with the cancelation of the unbalance caused from the rotor. In the last section of this work the simulation results are verified with experiments.
