The housing estate of Trakiya is the third biggest socialistic Project of Bulgaria. It is located in the south part of the 6000 years old city of Plovdiv. Build between 1971 and 1983, Trakiya is the youngest district of Plovdiv. At first the place was populated according to the socialistic principle for homogeneity and equality with inhabitants from different origin. Those originated as well from the centre of the city as from the surrounding villages. About 40 years later Trakiya has become one of the most appealing districts to young families and awaits its 4th generation of inhabitants. During this time period and especially after Die Wende in 1989 the district transformed and changed almost uncontrolled according to the needs and wishes of its inhabitants that meanwhile became owners of the apartments. A complex analysis that aims to examine the social anthropological and architectural aspects of the district purposes to highlight a problem that disturbs the positive further development of the district. A top-down urban intervention is planned aiming to stimulate bottom-up activities.
