Pamminger, R. (2011).
The objective of this work is the development of a DfE (Design for Environment) - process for the integration of environmental requirements into the product development process with the case study of the tram Valencia.
The DfE-process consists of six modules database, life cycle assessment (LCA), maintenance, recycling, product improvement and environmental communication and provides a structured approach to the implementation of sustainable product development/ Ecodesign. The results of the implementation of DfE-process are e.g. a material declaration, an LCA, recycling rates, an evaluation of maintenance and a Green Product Concept. In addition, a proposal is made for environmental communication.
Advantages of the DfE process:
* Easy monitoring the process through a structured approach * Simplified and standardized data collection with the help of databases * Meeting future standards by forward-looking product development * New and innovative ideas through a new approach Using the case study tram Valencia, the life cycle assessment module shows that the energy consumption is responsible for most of the environmental impacts. Considering environmental, maintenance and recycling aspects the Green Product Concept for the tram Valencia includes the improvement measures "oversized air conditioners", "cover components made of natural fiber composites", "side wall paneling made of aluminum or thermoplastic" etc. As environmental communication instruments for the buyer an environmental product declaration (EPD) and for the end user an energy efficiency label are proposed as environmental communication instruments. If an LCA has been already conducted, a product carbon footprint can be used for the end user as well.
