A simulation tool for a thermal energy storage based on sand

Abstract

Thermische Energie Speicher haben das Potential die Schere zwischen Angebot und Nachfrage nach elektrischer Energie, welche auf die natuerlich bedingte stark volatile Stromerzeugung von alternativen Energiewandlungsmehtoden zurueck zu fuehren ist, zu schliessen oder zumindest deutlich zu verkleinern. Ein solch neues Speicherkonzept basierend auf Sand (sandTES) wird am Institut fuer Energietechnik und Thermodynamik der technischen Universitaet untersucht.<br />Mit Hilfe der Anwendung des Fluidisierungsprinzipes auf Sand kann ein hoch effizienter Waermetauscher geschaffen werden, der es ermoeglicht Hochtemperaturwaerme in beliebigen Mengen in Sand einzuspeichern. Sand ist ein dafuer best geeignetes Waermespeichermedium: guenstig und in allen nachhaltigen Belangen unbedenklich. The maximale Temperatur ist nur durch die Grenzen der Werkstoffe begrenzt. Ein solches Waermespeichersystem kann in solar thermischen Kraftwerken, adiabaten Druckluftspeicherkraftwerken und anderen Hochtemperaturwaermeanwendungen, wo ein Waermespeicher noetig ist, verwendet werden.<br />In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein Simulations Tool in Matlab entwickelt, um das generelle Verhalten und Performance eines solchen sandTES Speicherkonzepts quantifizieren zu koennen. Es werden die pyhsikalischen Grundlagen und die angenommen Vereinfachungen zur Erstellung des rechenbaren Modells erklaert, um den Leser in die Funktionalitaet des Simulations Tools einzufuehren. Es werden die Grundfunktionen des Simulations Tools kurz erlaeutert und etliche Simulationen praesentiert. Ebenfalls wird in Fallbeispielen das Potential eines solchen Waermespeicherkonzepts aufgezeigt werden.<br />

Thermal energy storage (TES) systems have the potential to cover the gap between supply and demand of electrical energy caused by the high natural induced volatility of renewable energy generation and thus contributes to a more continuous and economical use of thermal energy. A novel TES based on the natural substance sand is investigated and at early development stage at the Institute of Energy and Thermodynamics of the University of Technology of Vianna:<br />Applying the fluidization principle to sand a highly efficient heat exchanger (HEX) can be established, offering the possibility of storing heat at high temperature and large quantity in a cheap and in all aspects uncritical storage medium. The maximum temperature in a sandTES is limited by the long period creep resistance of heat-resisting steel.<br />The technology is therefore well suited for implementation in thermal solar power plants, adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) plants and other high temperature thermal storage applications.<br />In this work a Simulation Tool written in Matlab enabling to quantify the behaviour and performance of a sandTES in various application is developed. The physics and the assumed model for calculating the performance of a sandTES are explained, to provide the reader with a better understanding for the features of this Matlab program. The core function of the Simulation Tool is introduced and a variety of calculations are presented. The potential of a sandTES is shown for some applications.
