Abstract:

In this thesis the distance protection for line-to-ground faults in electrical grids with high resistance neutral earthing and high capacitive earth fault currents is analyzed. The high resistance neutral earthing leads to a small resistive earth fault current. At the relays those currents are superposed with the capacitive earth fault currents. The goal is to find out if the relays are able to calculate the direction of the ground fault under those circumstances. Therefore, an analytic model of a medium voltage grid with wind turbines is developed. In addition a simulation is implemented in Simulink. By varying the parameters of the model, the effects on the measurements of the relaysare analyzed. Two lines with wind turbines shall be protected by relays. The remaining line-to-earth capacitance of the grid is combined into one three-phase capacitor. The remaining wind turbines are also combined to one source. When a ground fault appears on one of the protected lines, the relay on this line should detect the fault in forward direction. The relay on the faultless line should detect the fault in reverse direction. The analysis shows that under specific circumstances the relay on the line with the ground fault is not able to detect the fault in forward direction. The results are highly dependent on the parameters of the model. For big values of the fault resistance the relay can have problems locating the fault. A higher resistance used for the neutral earthing leads to a worse performance concerning the location of the fault by the relay. Additionally, a high active power fed into the grid by the wind turbines on the line with the ground fault can lead to a worse situation for locating the fault. The analytic model and the simulation lead to the same results concerning the detection of the faults by the relays for most cases. If the defective lines are long, the simulation shows a better detection of the direction of the fault. The analytic model can therefore be used to estimate the worstcase.
