Das exponentielle Wachstum im internationalen Tourismus hat zur Folge, dass in immer mehr Destinationen die Grenze der Tragfähigkeit überschritten wurde. Sowohl kleine Orte wie Hallstatt, als auch große Städte wie Amsterdam sind davon betroffen. Touristische Destinationen sehen sich zunehmend mit einer Reihe problematischer Auswirkungen durch übermäßigen Tourismus konfrontiert, wie beispielsweise Overcrowding oder steigende Mieten. Es gibt dabei einerseits viele Überschneidungen, andererseits aber auch örtliche Unterschiede in der Art und Intensität. Die verschiedenen Auswirkungen führen insgesamt jedenfalls zu sinkender Lebensqualität für die ortsansässige Bevölkerung und letztlich sinkender Tourismusakzeptanz. Ein Zustand der als Overtourism bezeichnet wird. Für davon betroffene Destinationen ist Handlungsbedarf gegeben. Es können dabei verschiedene Strategien und Maßnahmen herangezogen werden um auf Overtourism zu reagieren. Dabei ist es allerdings notwendig, dass die konkreten Problemlagen einer Destination analysiertwerden, um individuell passende Maßnahmen für die jeweilige Situation zu entwickeln.Verschiedene Beispiele aus vorrangig europäischen Overtourism‐Destinationen veranschaulichen die unterschiedlichen Auswirkungen und zeigen mögliche Handlungsansätze auf.

The exponential growth in international tourism has led to a situation in which the carrying capacity of more and more destinations is exceeded. This concerns small villages as well escities like amsterdam. Tourist destinations are confronted with an increasing number of problematic effects, like ring rents or overcrowding, caused by an unsustainable amount of tourism. On the one hand there are many similarities but on the other hand also local differences regarding the types and intensity of these effects. The impacts of to much tourism lead to lower quality of life for residents and ultimately they lower the acceptance of tourism in the host population. This state is called overtourism. Destinations which are experiencing overtourism have to act. There are different possible strategies and measures to adress this issue. When doing so, it is necessary to analyse the specific impacts and problems a destinations is confronted with, so that specific measures can be developed.Different examples, mainly from european overtourism‐destinations show the different impacts and possible ways to react.
