Kotrc, B. (2020). Minka reloaded – re-use concepts for traditional Japanese residential houses since 1868 [Diploma Thesis, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://doi.org/10.34726/hss.2020.56236

According to a 2015 report by the Development Bank of Japan, more than 211.000 minka – traditional Japanese residential houses of the common people – are vacant and unused in spite of still being in good condition. Concerning this problem already exist various concepts to revive those objects and sensibly return them to use, initialised amongst others by the Japanese government and several NPOs.The thesis at hand empirically analyses, compares and evaluates some of these re-use examples with the intent to depict the minka’s potential plurality of use and to support future re-use projects in the field of consultation and decision making.
