If you try to perceive the city in a historical-cultural sense, the historical layers become visible. Individual events as well as entire epochs manifest themselves in buildings and structures and thus inscribe themselves into the overall shape of the city. The historic houses, the churches and squares, the gates and protective walls, the palaces of the aristocrats and the late modern houses - all these witnesses of the respective times reflect the conditions at that time and the masterful achievements of the artists. With this in mind, the city - as the theme of the museum - moves into the position of an exhibit. In contrast to monuments made into museums in the classical sense - monuments morts - from which their original function was removed, the city always remains alive. In the course of time and the development of society, their image is gradually deformed and supplemented, witnesses of the past are removed, changed or replaced and the additions offer a distorted picture of the current time. Due to the overlapping of the layers and buildings, the city experiences a diversity and density that not only stands for the individual epochs, but can also create spatial tensions and new locations.Based on this idea, a museum that deals with the history of the city can, with suitable means - in addition to the exhibits in the collections - make the architecture and image of the city its theme, too. This idea can be strengthened by a precise choice of location. However, it should be noted that this place usually already exists, with its independent use, history and tradition, as well as the cultural significance for the city and its residents. Therefore, the design is only carried out taking into account the interaction between the function and its conditions, the structural possibilities and spatial requirements, as well as the outside space, its atmosphere, its character and its function. The project represents an endeavour, one option for intervention, to address the existing urban situation on the banks of the Danube in Bratislava. Taking into account the existing uses and the atmosphere of the place, an attemptis made to plan the space with targeted measures for further cultural use. In this case, the museum becomes a place of collection, communication and exhibition, that thematizes the history and development of the city and, with the design of the waterfront zone, the surrounding buildings and the nearby park, a place of culture and recreation for the city, its residents and visitors.
