Josef Klieber. Das ikonografische Programm des „k. k. polytechnischen Institutes“ (1815 -1842)

Abstract

Das Hauptgebäude des polytechnischen Institutes mit der Ikonografie Josef Kliebers zählt zu einer der größten Aufgaben des 19. Jahrhunderts im Kaisertum Österreichs. Diese Behauptung findet ihre Legitimation in der Tatsache, dass die Errichtung des k.k. polytechnischen Institutes nicht nur die Würde der Technik zu wiederspiegeln hatte, sondern auch eine nationale Bildungsanstalt geschaffen wurde, welche der Hebung der Nationalindustrie geweiht wurde und somit ihren Platz als bedeutende akademische Anstalt in der Geschichte Österreichs erhalten hat.Die vorliegende Arbeit hinterfragt, inwieweit die für das polytechnische Institut geschaffene Ikonografie Josef Kliebers von der Antikenrezeption beeinflusst worden war. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, aus welchem Grund die an der Akademie gelehrten und staatspolitisch vertretenen Klassizismusgrundsätze einen Einfluss auf das ambitionierte ikonografische Programm Josef Kliebers geübt haben. Es wird versucht zu erklären, warum die Anregungen der griechisch-römischen Antike für das Schaffen einer vollkommen neuen und revolutionären Institution des polytechnischen Instituts in Wien in einer Krisenkultur verwendet wurden.Das Ergebnis der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit stellt ein Katalog von Handzeichnungen, Abbildungen und Aufnahmen von Werken Kliebers, gewidmet dem k.k. polytechnischen Institut in Wien, dar.

The main building of the Polytechnic Institute with the iconography of Joseph Klieber belongs to one of the greatest assignments of the 19th century in the Austrian Empire. This statement finds its legitimation in the fact that the establishment of the k. k. polytechnic Institute had not only to exemplify the importance of the technology, but also, once the national educational institution was built, it enforced the improvement of the national industry and therefore gained its status as an important academic establishment in the history of Austria.The presented thesis analyzes to what extent the conducted iconography of Joseph Klieber was influenced by the reception of Antiquity. It puts into question, for what reason the principles of Neoclassicism, which were taught on the Academy as well as politically determined, influenced the ambitious iconographical program of Joseph Klieber. The thesis tries to elucidate, why the impulses of Greek and Roman Antiquity were applied in the period of crisis for one completely novel and revolutionary institution of Polytechnic Institute in Vienna.The outcome of the presented paperwork represents the catalogue of hand drawings, illustrations and images of works by Joseph Klieber referenced to the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna.
