dc.description.abstract
The urban phenomenon of Inquilinatos Collective, informal, temporary housing for a socioeconomically disadvantaged population in Bogotá This thesis deals with a housing typology called Inquilinato. The word Inquilinato describes a building in which rooms and berths are rented to socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals and families. The Inquilinato is not only a housing typology but also a way of inhabiting and living as well as a business model. The most important characteristics are low-threshold access, daily payment and a central location. Currently, the Inquilinato appears to be a precarious, socio-spatial and socially problematic form of housing. Nevertheless, the existence of Inquilinatos is essential. For more than 3% of the urban population in Bogotá, they are the only accessible form of housing and they represent a bottom-up strategy against poverty and housing shortage. This work analyses the housing typology from an urban and architectural perspective as well as from a historical, social and economic point of view. In addition, this thesis looks into its strengths and potentials relevant to human and urban development, which are key for the further development of the Inquilinato into a decent form of living. Further on, the findings are translated into strategic recommendations for Inquilinatos. The aim of the work is to reduce the stigmatization of Inquilinatos and its inhabitants through a positive approach and to lay the foundation for an urban strategy for Inquilinatos in Bogotá.
