Abstract:

Italian home culture sees the home as a life project, a possession that one continues to build, redesign and reinterpret over time, a symbol of community, family, comfort and security. It is a theme that has entrusted the architect with a complex task, that of designing living spaces that allow for "vivere all'italiana", which implies not only the fulfilment of elementary needs, but also a relationship with the landscape and light and a taste for Grandezza and Bellezza, values that have always characterised the Mediterranean spirit of life. The definition of a national architectural style was addressed in Milan especially in the first half of the 20th century. The new industrial bourgeoisie promoted a cultural and economic development that allowed architects to experiment in depth in the field of residential architecture, especially in its relationship with the surrounding urban space, which allowed for an exemplary typological diversity. The research in this paper is based on the study of various residential buildings in Milan and their careful analysis and classification. This is followed by a reinterpretation of the content and a prototypical elaboration of the typological models that emerged from the research. The project section begins with the fragment of the Villa: it is the space that, more than any other, expresses the sophistication of Milanese residential culture; the Villa highlights the theme of cultural tension between architects and clients, and also the issue of living in relation to nature. Next comes the fragment of the Casa. These are small dwellings where the expression of the living unit on the façade is determined by the interior. The Casa is the result of the architects' search for the right and appropriate living space, a search that becomes a cultural debate, aimed at the masses and that gradually distances Italy from the international architectural scene. These last fragments also focus on the interiors, highlighting the qualities of comfort, functionality and aesthetics typical of Italian residential culture, with a critical eye on housing concepts in which spatial qualities are subordinated to densification and space saving.
