Abstract

This is a story about spatial In-betweenness in the Maasai way of life. 4 elements, characters almost, that converse across the Plains of Tanzania, posing questions. Questions about history, tradition, global development, architecture, identity, cultural tokens, spatial configurations and why we all love to hear a good story. In-betweenness is deeply embedded in the spatial narrative of the Maasai, and is synonymous with the space-between that is the gap or threshold. The word ‘threshold’ translates into German as die Schwelle, the swell of ebb-and-flow, the In-betweenness that symbolises transition and change. We are travelling to the hidden spaces of the threshold, listening to the narratives of its history and reading excerpts from its diary. We are playing a game in which the player holding the joker passes it secretly on to the next and so draws lines and creates relationships. We are tour through and mapping out the Masai narratives, only to lose ourselves in the lines of conversation. But in the end there is a pause, which is yet the beginning.

Es ist eine Geschichte der Zwischenräumlichkeit der Maasai in Tanzania. 4 Elemente, fast sogar Charaktere, die sich durch Tanzania konversieren, um Fragen zu stellen. Fragen der Geschichte, Tradition, der globalen Entwicklung, der Architektur, Identität und ihrer kulturellen Merkmale. Fragen der räumlichen Konfiguration und warum wir alle eine gute Geschichte lieben. Die räumliche Existenz der Maasai ist tief in das Narrativ der Zwischenräumlichkeit eingebettet, es ist ein Synonym für den Zwischenraum, die Lücke oder Schwelle, ein Wort, das wie Ebbe und Flut eine Geschichte der Veränderung und des Umbruchs erzählt. Wir reisen zu versteckten Plätzen der Schwelle, wir hören uns Berichte ihrer Geschichte an und lesen einen Auszug ihres Tagebuchs. Wir spielen ein Spiel, indem einer den Joker in der Hand hält und ihn ganz unbemerkt herumgibt, um Linien und Beziehungen zu gestalten. Wir machen eine Tour und verörtlichen die Geschichte der Maasai, nur um uns dann in einer Linenkonversation zu verlieren. Am Ende steht die Pause, die doch auch am Anfang steht.
