Today more than a third of Austrias population live in the metropolitan area of Vienna. Increasingly, urban dwellers of the 21st century suffer from cardiovascular diseases, obesity, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorders and depression. The implementation of preventive approaches in health care to reduce the negative health effects of the urban environment on its citizens is therefore currently a topic of high relevance. Countermeasures against these diseases include physical exercise, mental activity, reducing stress, reduction of loud noises, meditation as well as exposure to nature. When these positive factors are considered beyond a purely medical context, possibilities open up that do not merely identify disease patterns, but rather focus on the human being as a whole. This is where the project »Centre for the Mental and Physical Wellbeing of Vienna‘s City Residents« takes hold. It aims to promote people‘s health in a de-institutionalized way. Instead of stigmatized and mostly curative healthcare facilities a recreational facility takes its place that combines both physical and mental needs with a holistic approach. Prioritizing inclusivity, this project offers a space that is open to Vienna‘s citizens across all income levels. As today digital distraction and sensory overload often dominate everyday life, this project is intended to serve the fundamental desire to slow down in order to open the possibility of reconnecting again with oneself. The project implements this idea using a square hall in a wooden construction, which embeds a room programme dedicated to mental and physical activity that is structured around a central courtyard. The adaptive construction of the Centre for Wellbeing enables the setting of the institution at several green spaces in Vienna, allowing easy accessibility for a wide range of the population.
