dc.description.abstract
The aim of this master's thesis is to find an architecture that combines real estate burdened by the pressure of exploitation and the needs of an activated urban society. At the beginning, the institutions and concepts of local urban development in Vienna are presented. In further course, concepts of the open city, the accessibility of public space and the city as a common good are examined. These analysis are accompanied by practical examples. The aim of the investigation is to derive instructions for an architecture of the open city. The second part of the thesis deals with the application of these instructions on the basis of an architectural design. This is followed by a building site analysis and building feasibility study of the "Gleisharfe Große Ungarbrücke" site in Vienna's protection zone, as well as an analysis of current hotel developments. The design answers the question of added value with the typology of the courtyard house with publicly accessible areas and open-ended construction. The upper floors mostly serve commercial activities such as hotel and office functions. The ground floor, however, is almost completely freed from exploitation pressure and dedicated to a variety of social functions. What open architecture can not do, namely the ongoing design of open spaces, as well as ensuring the accessibility of all, is organized by an independent committee of curators. The result is a building that blends with the city, creating synergies between commercial intentions and public interests.
