The increasing demand for plastics combined with the ever-increasing scarcity of raw materials and a growing awareness in society for sustainability mean that recycling is becoming an even more important topic. A fundamental step for functioning recycling is an appropriate sorting of plastics. Currently, plastics are only sorted by type. This work deals with polypropylene and the different decoration variants of polypropylene cups to find out, if the decoration affects the quality of the recycled material. For this purpose, in the course of this work, post-consumer material was sorted and recycled into different fractions according to the type of decoration, namely Direct Print, Cardboard-Plastic-Combination, Plastic-Sleeve, In-Mold and Unprinted. A further distinction was made according to the type of disposal, in residual waste or in light packaging. The different fractions were tested mechanically, rheologically and thermally. Neither the type of disposal nor the decoration variant has a significant effect on the quality of the material properties of the recyclate. The only exception here is the In-Mold material, as this is pure injection molding material. Therefore, different material properties are wanted for the virgin material. In the case of the other fractions, the differences in quality can also largely be explained by the proportion of injection molded material. Based on the results of these initial tests, the focus in the second part of the work was placed on the type of molding of the cups, namely injection molded or thermoformed. The results of the tests carried out in this part of the work confirmed the assumptions made in the previous section, as the injection-molded fractions gave significantly different results than the thermoformed fractions in both the mechanical and rheological tests. To investigate whether a more precise separation of plastic waste in Austria would be possible, a survey was conducted at the Vienna University of Technology. The results suggest that, with the necessary sensitization, there is potential to separate plastics not only from the rest of the waste, but also from each other. Although there are limitations which demand further research.
