The main objective of this paper is to find out what will be the role of wood biomass in the future improved energy system, what growth areas there are in the biomass-energy business in Austria and the adjacent countries traditionally the market of ist industry For this purpose a more in-depth survey of supply of and energy-related demand for wood biomass is conducted using personal experience, interviews conducted with knowledgeable people, literature and Internet recherché. Then a match of supply and demand is tried to identify the overlaps that would mean either potentially growing or endangered markets. An additional second objective is to enlighten Austrian and European policy makers, therefore the results of political intervention mainly in form of subsidies are included throughout the survey. The temporal scope is a prediction for the next 10 to 15 years, the maximum timeframe an investor usually consider. Therefore only technologies already in use are included; those only in the laboratory or first prototype stage are outside the scope of the survey.
