Project Yusuhara : re-thinking metabolism in the town above the clouds

Abstract

Wie die Zukunft der Architektur - im Sinne der professionellen Praxis, so wie als gebaute Umwelt - aussehen wird, ist heute kaum abschätzbar. Der Druck der Veränderung ist hoch, bedingt durch gewandelte ökonomische Rahmenbedingungen, so wie durch neue Formen der Organisation, des Planens und des Bauens. Die Frage der Ressourceneffizienz und der Nachhaltigkeit spielt auf allen Ebenen eine immer größere Rolle, um das ökologische System nicht zusehends aus der Bahn zu werfen. Lokale und globale Spannungsfelder sind ein weiteres Zeichen unseres sogenannten digitalen Zeitalters, dass die Menschheit mit einer Vielzahl an Veränderungen und demografischen Umstrukturierungen konfrontiert. Wenn man davon ausgeht, dass die Architektur die kulturellen und sozialen Entwicklungen ihrer Zeit in Raum und Form repräsentiert und erörtert, wird die Bedeutsamkeit dieses gesamten Organismus im Zusammenhang klar.Unter den Vorzeichen der Veränderungen versteht sich diese Arbeit, die im Zusammenhang zu einem Rechercheaufenthalt in Japan steht, als vielschichtige Analyse und Bestandsaufnahme, die letztlich in seiner Gesamtheit Architektur, als Resultat der transkulturellen Erfahrung und des interdisziplinären Lernens im Kontext der metabolischen Tendenzen und Parameter unserer Zeit zum Ausdruck bringt.

The future of architecture - as a profession itself, as well as speaking of our built environment - is hard to predict in those days. Due to the restraining economic conditions, new emerging forms of organizing and digital planning processes, high pressure is put on the fundamentals of the architectural discipline. It is more and more a question of finding the right balance between economic, as well as environmental conditions and how to deal with sustainability to prevent the ecological system from collapsing. Local and global zones of conflicts are another sign of our so-called Digital Age which brings lots of changes to the human kind with a shift in demographics leading all the way. The importance of this omnipresent issues speaks for itself, assuming that Architecture is considered to be the social and cultural representation, or better referred as, engagement of its times in the form of space and shape. On the basis of this statement and linked to an intensive research period in Japan, the entity of this work could be described as a polyvalent analysis and evaluation of the situation which finally results in an architectural project consolidating the transcultural experience and the interdisciplinary learning process within the metabolic context of the parameters and tendencies of our times.
