In 1931 the Ernst-Happel-Stadium was opened in Vienna and still counts as the largest sports facility in the country. Every year, in addition to the games of the Austrian national football team, there are also numerous concerts and smaller sporting events, which take here place. However with the European Football Championship 2008 in Austria and Switzerland the last major global sporting event was over a decade ago. The reason for that is, because despite repeated renovations in the past, the stadium is ageing and therefore it no longer meets the timely, international requirements. Also new and more modern sports facilities were built in many European cities, which means that the Ernst-Happel-Stadium has lost relevance as a potential location for major events. However a European metropolis like Vienna should have a new, modern national stadium. Therefore the number of supporters within the population, but also in the media landscape is increasing more and more. With the new Prater Stadium, a multifunctional sports venue is planned. The purpose is to enable, especially visitors of football matches, ideal visual qualities and a great atmosphere. Despite of the existing running track, it will be made possible with the use of removable stands. Also a sliding roof shall ensure athletes and visitors a better comfort during bad weather. Furthermore a new Park and Ride parking ramp takes place between the stadium and the green Prater, where the roof is used as another entrance to the sports facility and also as a place for outdoor activities.
