Gordon Moore predicted in the 1965 published article "Cramming more components onto integrated circuits" a doubling of the number of transistors per chip every twelve months (In 1975, Moore decreased his prediction to a doubling only every two years). This as Moore's Law known rule of thumb is valid till today. The capacity of storage media like hard disks and optical storage systems shows a parallel development to the increase of the number of transistors per chip. For example, the storage density of the optical storage media increased from 650MB for a CD (1982) over 4.7GB for a DVD (1995) to 54GB for a Blu-ray Disc (2006). The demand of an all-purpose optical storage system for these different optical storage media leads to the implementation of programmable optical receiver ICs with high bandwidths and high sensitivities. These properties for optical receiver ICs are required to achieve a proper readout velocity on one side and a suitable signal to noise ratio on the other side. Nowadays, optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) are used as receivers, since the bond wires between the photodiodes and the chip can be omitted. New feedback circuits were investigated during this thesis to increase the bandwidth of single-stage transimpedance amplifiers. Beside this, also a fully functional optical receiver IC for commercial applications was developed in cooperation with Infineon. This work is divided into four parts. The first chapter provides an insight into the history of optical storage media. The second one summarizes the most important terms for optical receivers, gives an overview of the basic amplifier structures for optical receiver ICs and presents the used 0.5µm BiCMOS process. In part three, the theory for transimpedance amplifier with a negative feedback loop is summarized. Furthermore, three different solutions for an improved feedback network and their implementation in different TIA structures is described. The last chapter gives an overview of solutions for optical receiver ICs from literature and describes the fully functional optical receiver IC in detail. The work is completed with a summary of the achieved results and a list of articles which have been published in conjunction with this thesis.
