Abstract:
It has been shown previously that the Cr-Mo and Mo prealloyed powders result in PM parts with better mechanical properties and higher precision. The higher density essential for improved mechanical properties can be attained by the recently developed High Velocity Compaction (HVC) technique. In this thesis, the sintering behaviour, the microstructure and the mechanical properties, in particular the fatigue response at very high loading cycle numbers, have been investigated for Cr-Mo and Mo prealloyed sintered steels at varying density levels. Ultrasonic fatigue testing at 20 kHz and R=-1 in push-pull mode was done on as-sintered materials up to 10E9 cycles. Cr-Mo steel performed markedly better than the plain Mo alloyed ones, due to the finer as-sintered microstructure of the former compared to the coarse upper bainitic structure of the Mo steel. Studies about fatigue crack initiation and small crack propagation, revealed that in the very early stage of fatigue cracking, numerous cracks are generated, and the microstructural orientation plays a markedly larger role than the loading direction. Only after further loading the cracks tend to coalesce, those ones growing perferentially that are oriented perpendicular to the stress axis. A special image analyzing software "PCS" was prepared within this thesis that yields reliable data about Ac for different fracture modes. When plotting Young's modulus and fatigue endurance strength (normalized to the data of pore free material) against the load bearing cross section Ac, satisfactory agreement was obtained, i.e. there are no empirical coefficients necessary to describe E and Sw through the microstructure.
