NONGRE - aus Erde geformt. Planung eines Kulturzentrums in Ghana

Abstract

Ghana erfährt seit mehreren Jahrzehnten einen wesentlichen sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Wandel. Angestrebt wird eine Importarchitektur aus den Baustoffen Stahl und Beton. Allerdings fehlt es der Bevölkerung Ghanas an der Lebenserfahrung innerhalb dieser Gebäudestrukturen in Symbiose mit dem vorherrschenden Klima. Seit je her wurden Baumaterialien verwendet, die an das örtliche Klima in Ghana und seine möglichen Auswirkungen auf den Menschen angepasst waren. Dieselbe Herausforderung betrifft auch die Bevölkerung Bolgatangas, einer Stadt der Upper East Region im Nordosten Ghanas.Diese Diplomarbeit befasst sich mit dem Entwurf des neuen Kulturzentrums für die „NONGRE Craft and Culture Foundation“ in Bolgatanga. Ziel der NONGRE Gründer*innen ist es, traditionelle Bauweisen und das kulturelle Erbe zu erhalten sowie die lokale Schulabbrecher*innenquote zu mindern. Der Entwurf des Kulturzentrums berücksichtigt nachhaltige, lokal vorkommende Materialien und zielt auf eine Konstruktion ab, die mit einfachen Werkzeugen und Hilfsmitteln durch die lokal ansässigen Bauarbeiter*innen umgesetzt werden kann.Neben der architektonischen und kulturellen Einordnung von Bolgatanga befasst sich die vorliegende Diplomarbeit mit einer Analyse des bereits bestehenden NONGRE Kulturzentrums, den Bedürfnissen der Gründer*innen, wie auch den Kindern und Mitgliedern der „NONGRE Craft and Culture Foundation“. Außerdem werden traditionelle Gehöfte sowie die Zusammenarbeit lokaler Bauarbeiter*innen und der NGO „Association la Voûte Nubienne“ untersucht, schriftlich dokumentiert und grafisch dargestellt. Auf Grundlage dessen wird ein architektonisches und energieeffizientes Konzept entwickelt, welches nachhaltige Baumaterialien und die Bedürfnisse der zukünftigen Nutzer*innen in Einklang bringen soll. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt wird auf die Planung mit kostengünstiger Umsetzung gelegt. Mit der Implementierung des ersten Lernraumes und dessen angrenzender Bibliothek wurde bereits im Winter 2022 begonnen.

Ghana has been experiencing significant social and economic changes for several decades. The aim is an imported architecture made of steel and concrete. However, Ghana‘s population lacks the experience of li-ving in these building structures in symbiosis with the prevailing climate. Since time immemorial, building materials have been used that were adapted to the local climate in Ghana and its possible effects on humans. The same challenge affects the population of Bolgatanga, a town in the Upper East Region of North-eastern Ghana.This thesis focuses on the design of the new cultural centre for the „NONGRE Craft and Culture Foundation“ in Bolgatanga. The aim of the NONGRE founders is to preserve traditional building methods and cultural heritage as well as the reduction of the local school dropout rate. The design of the cultural centre is charac-terised by sustainable, locally available materials and aims at a construction that can be implemented with simple tools and aids by local construction workers.In addition to the architectural and cultural classification of Bolgatanga, this thesis deals with an analysis of the already existing NONGRE cultural centre, the needs of the founders, as well as the children and members of the „NONGRE Craft and Culture Foundation“. Furthermore, traditional homesteads and the cooperation of local construction workers and the NGO „Association la Voûte Nubienne“ will be investigated, documen-ted in writing and presented graphically. Based on this, an architectural and energy-efficient concept will be developed, which will harmonise sustainable building materials and the needs of the future users. Another focus will be on planning with cost-effective implementation. The implementation of the first learning room and its adjacent library has already begun in winter 2022.
