Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Entwurf einer Bibliothek in Heilbronn, einer Großstadt, welche sich im südwestlichen Teil Deutschlands befindet. Heilbronn ist eine Industriestadt mit einer stetig wachsenden Bevölkerung. Eines der Probleme, welches durch den raschen Bevölkerungszuwachs verursacht wird, ist das Fehlen angemessener kultureller und sozialer Strukturen in der Stadt. So besitzt Heilbronn aktuell nur eine einzige, zweistöckige Bibliothek für die 125.000 Einwohner*innen. Wenn die Menschen des angrenzenden Landkreises hinzugerechnet werden, welche alle potenzielle Büchereibenutzer*innen darstellen, wird das dringende Bedürfnis nach einer Veränderung noch einmal verdeutlicht. Unter Berücksichtigung dieses Defizits ist der Grundgedanke meines Entwurfs, in der Innenstadt ein Bibliotheksgebäude zu schaffen, welches die Bewohner*innen zum Lesen und Forschen zu ermutigt. Mit seiner flexiblen Gestaltung und organischen Form könnte das neue Bibliotheksgebäude zu einem wichtigen Merkmal des Stadtbilds werden. Dabei soll die neue Bibliothek ein Ort der Zusammenkunft und des Wissens sein, wo niemand ausgeschlossen ist.

The present work deals with the design of a library in Heilbronn, a city which is located in the south-west of Germany. Heilbronn is an industrial city with a steadily increasing population. One of the problems which is caused by its fast growth is the lack of adequate cultural and social structures in the city. Currently, there is only one medium-sized library for its 125,000 residents. When one considers the 450,000 inhabitants of Heilbronn’s catchment area, who compose additional potential users of the library, the urgent need for a change cannot be empathized enough. Based on this deficiency, the basic idea of my design is to create a library building in the city center, which could encourage residents to read and research. With a flexible design and organic shape, the library building could become an important feature of the cityscape. The new library might be a place of gathering and knowledge, where no one is excluded.
