Curare - the artwork and its public

Abstract

This master thesis is based on the relationship between art and its public. The research focuses on the social aspect of making and exhibiting art, and explores issues such as the perception and impact of art inside and outside the classical white cube, which defines museums and exhibition spaces. What are the social aspects of an exhibition and how is the site of presentation connected to the implementation of this social role?The exhibition Chambres d’Amis curated in 1986 by Jan Hoet was examined as a case study and thus serves as a main research method for the thesis. Chambres d’Amis’ problematic nature has been studied in detail and compared with similar exhibition formats, in order to expand the spectrum of the theoretical approach. Gordon Matta-Clark’s projects FOOD and Pig Roast from 1971, the collaboration between Jef Geys and the secondary school of Balen, and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, as well as the installation Percutaneous Delights, by the Vienna-based artist group Gelatin are some of the comparative examples building the research-skeleton of the thesis.Interventions and exhibition situations of different scales have been implemented in public and exhibition spaces and serve as experiments, which aim to prove the thesis and find answers to the research questions. The organization and implementation of these exhibition situations was running parallel to the research process, so both the theoretical and the practical part of this thesis have been constantly changing, adapting and influencing each other. The body of the whole work is frequently “interrupted” by interviews with exhibition experts, curators, educators and artists which offer different approaches to the examined topics and show alternative standpoints.The re-enactment of the seminal exhibition Chambres d’Amis will serve as a conclusion of the artistic research and analysis within the framework of this thesis. Contributions from 51 contemporary artists are selected on the basis of the original exhibition and installed in one private home in Vienna turning it into a museum and opening it to the public. The recreation of this fundamental exhibition from 1986 which played a crucial role in contemporary art discourse should serve as an homage as well as a foundation for a sustained discussion of current topics.I aim to perceive my projects less as static entities and more as adaptable, dynamic acts. Therefore, this master thesis owns a flexible body, which emerges from a combination of actions, studying the nature of the art exhibition and aiming to question, listen to and understand its complex environment.

Diese Masterarbeit thematisiert die Beziehung zwischen Kunst und ihrer Öffentlichkeit. Die Analyse fokussiert auf den sozialen Aspekt des Machens und Ausstellens von Kunst und erforscht Fragen, wie die der Wahrnehmung und Wirkung von Kunst innerhalb und außerhalb des klassischen White Cube, der Museen und Ausstellungsräume als solche definiert. Was sind die sozialen Aspekte einer Ausstellung und wie ist der Ort der Präsentation mit der Umsetzung dieser sozialen Rolle verbunden? Die 1986 von Jan Hoet kuratierte Ausstellung Chambres d'Amis wurde als Fallstudie untersucht und dient somit als Hauptforschungsmethode der Arbeit. Die Problematik von Chambres d'Amis wurde im Detail untersucht und mit ähnlichen Ausstellungsformaten verglichen, um das Spektrum des theoretischen Ansatzes zu erweitern. Gordon Matta-Clarks Projekte FOOD und Pig Roast von 1971, die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Jef Geys und der Sekundarschule Balen bzw. dem Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Gent, sowie die Installation Percutaneous Delights der Wiener Künstlergruppe Gelatin sind einige der Vergleichsbeispiele, die das Forschungsskelett der Arbeit bilden.Interventionen und Ausstellungssituationen unterschiedlichen Maßstabs wurden im öffentlichen Raum und in Ausstellungsräumen implementiert und dienen als Experimente, die darauf abzielen, die These zu überprüfen und Antworten auf die Forschungsfragen zu finden. Die Organisation und Umsetzung dieser Ausstellungssituationen verlief parallel zum Forschungsprozess, so dass sich sowohl der theoretische als auch der praktische Teil dieser Arbeit ständig veränderten, anpassten und gegenseitig beeinflussten. Der Gesamtkörper der Arbeit wird immer wieder durch Interviews mit Ausstellungsexpert*innen, Kurator*innen, Pädagog*innen und Künstler*innen "unterbrochen", die unterschiedliche Zugänge zu den untersuchten Themen bieten und alternative Standpunkte aufzeigen.Das re-enactment der bedeutenden Ausstellung Chambres d'Amis dient als Abschluss der künstlerischen Recherche und Analyse im Rahmen dieser Arbeit. In Anlehnung an die Originalausstellung werden Beiträge von 51 zeitgenössischen Künstler*Innen ausgewählt und in einer Wiener Privatwohnung installiert, die dadurch zu einem Museum und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wird. Die Rekonstruktion dieser zugrundeliegenden Ausstellung von 1986, die eine entscheidende Rolle im zeitgenössischen Kunstdiskurs spielte, soll sowohl als Hommage, als auch als Grundlage für eine nachhaltige Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen Themen dienen.Mein Ziel ist es, meine Projekte weniger als statische Strukturen, sondern vielmehr als anpassungsfähige, dynamische Akte zu begreifen. Daher besitzt diese Masterarbeit einen flexiblen Körper, der aus einer Kombination von Handlungen entsteht, die das Wesen der Kunstausstellung untersuchen und darauf abzielen, ihre komplexe Umgebung zu hinterfragen, ihr “zuzuhören” und sie zu verstehen.
