Birkelbach, F. (2023, May 9). Optimization Strategies for Industrial Excess Heat Recovery [Conference Presentation]. Energy Future Industry 2023, Göteborg, Sweden.
To effectively utilize industrial excess heat, both the design and the operation of industrial energy systems need to be optimized accordingly. Traditionally this has been done through heuristic (i.e. experience and rule-based) approaches. Mathematical optimization has the potential to find better solutions through smart modeling and advanced algorithms.
In this talk three applications of mathematical optimization to improve excess heat utilization are presented: Design optimization (heat exchanger network synthesis, operation optimization (industrial energy hub) and a simultaneous design and operation optimization.
The impact on energy savings are shown and the connection with emissions and cost are discussed. The potential of using mathematical optimization as a tool for designing and operating energy systems is highlighted.
