Wagner, L., Braun, S., & Scheichl, B. (2022). V0009: Popping the cork of a champagne bottle: simulation of the coupled gas and cork dynamics [Video]. American Physical Society - Division of Fluid Dynamics. https://doi.org/10.1103/APS.DFD.2022.GFM.V0009
The numerical simulation of the supersonic jet of carbon dioxide escaping from a sparkling- wine bottle during the first milliseconds after its opening and of the movement of the cork stopper it propels are visualised. The formation and splitting of a Mach disk between the bottle opening and the stopper are clearly seen. The open-soure software environment "Clawpack", centered around Godunov's finite-volume scheme, was employed to predict the inviscid gas dynamics and the associated fluid-stopper interaction.
