Die Festung Arad : Geschichte, Bestandsaufnahme und Revitalisierungskonzept

Abstract

Die Festung Arad im rumänischen Banat ist eine im 18. Jahrhundert während der Regentschaft Maria Theresias gebaute Festung. Die im Stil des französischen Baumeisters Vauban angelegte Fortifikation in Form eines sechseckigen Sterns befindet sich in einer Flusskrümmung des Marosch, der sie an drei Seiten umschließt. Ausgestattet mit Kasematten, Wehrtürmen, Durchgängen und Freiflächen sowie flutbaren Kanälen und einer Kirche befindet sich die Festung noch heute in staatlichem Besitz und beherbergt eine militärische Einheit. Hinsichtlich der Zukunft des Festungsbauwerks gibt es bereits jahrzehntelang einen Konflikt zwischen der Stadtgemeinde und dem Verteidigungsministerium. Im Sinne einer stadträumlichen Erweiterung von Arad wird in der Diplomarbeit neben allfälligen Restaurierungsmaßnahmen ein Revitalisierungsprojekt mit öffentlicher Nutzung auf Basis einer historischen und architektonischen Analyse der Fortifikation im Kontext der Geschichte von Arad vorgelegt.

The Fortress of Arad, was built in the 18th century, under Maria Theresa, using the Vauban system. The star shaped construction is placed in the Mures loop, having five out of the six corners surrounded by water. Given that it is still an ideal place for military purposes, having numerous rooms, gangs, watch towers and green spaces as well as a surrounding floodable canal, the fortress is housing up to this day military units. There is a rising conflict between the municipality and the defense ministry regarding the future development of the fortress. The latter refuses to move the unities out of the citadel, giving it back to the city, despite having been offered a multitude of alternative places by the city council. In this paper, together with an analyses of the history of the fortress and the city, as well as a survey of the current state of the construction, I will support the public point of view, developing a restoration and revitalization concept, that will put the citadel in common use.
