In today’s world, plastics are indispensable as packaging and construction materials. However, the short lifespan of packaging has led to a global waste problem. Even the wealthy, industrialized countries of the European Union have not been spared from the selfinduced flood of packaging waste. The solution for this problem, declared by the European Commission, is called a Circular Economy. To achieve a circular economy for plastic packaging in the EU, higher recycling ra- tes are needed, among a variety of other factors. To increase these rates, plastic waste fractions that aren’t currently recycled or have hardly been recycled in the past, need to be utilized. One such fraction consists of (multilayer) plastic film packaging (short: films). Polyethylene and polypropylene are the polymers with the highest annual production volume, so the leverage effect to increase the total recycling rate is the biggest for these two polymers. In this research project, films whose main components are either LDPE, PP homopolymer, or (ethylene-propylene) copolymer were examined. For this purpose, in two series of experi- ments, blends and pure copolymers (both series with virgin granules and post-consumer mate- rials) were subjected to a recycling process over multiple cycles under laboratory conditions. The aim is to monitor the changes in material properties (degradation) over each recycling cycle and to influence them positively through a suitable blending ratio. The experimental evi- dence was provided by mechanical tests (tensile & impact tensile tests, film puncture & film tensile tests), rheological tests (MFI, frequency sweep, extensional rheology), thermal analysis (DSC), and optical methods (light microscopy, SEM). The results offer a promising perspective for blends with a ratio of approximately 70% post- consumer PP films and 30% post-consumer PE films. The examined copolymers showed a significant increase in MFI, which, however, could be greatly reduced by making blends of copolymer, post-consumer PE and post-consumer PP films without noticeably affecting the mechanical properties.
