Natural bone has the ability to repair itself as long as the defect is small. Once the defect exceeds a critical size, the body needs artificial support to restore the missing structure. Artificial bone replacement is designed to regenerate the damaged material by mimicking the natural bone tissue as closely as possible in structure and mechanics. The implant serves as a replacement for the missing endogenous bone and must be able to withstand the applied loads which include the handling of the implant before and during surgery as well as the stresses from the patient's daily activities. Structural similarities, such as a certain degree of porosity, facilitate bone ingrowth, vascularization, transport of nutrients and removal of waste. Hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate and zirconia are bioceramics that can be produced by digital light processing (DLP) based vat polymerization to fit each individual patient’s needs. Hydroxyapatite or tricalcium phosphate ceramics impress with properties such as osteoconductivity or osteoinductivity and bioresorbability but have low mechanical properties and can only be used as small bone replacement implants. Zirconia on the other hand has high compressive and flexural strength and is also biocompatible. Therefore, we produced parts of hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate in combination with zirconia to evaluate the properties of the combined product. We investigated the suitability for the DLP-based vat polymerization and analyzed the sintered parts regarding mechanics and microstructure.
