Gritsch, L., Breslmayer, G., Rainer, R., & Lederer, J. (2023). Analysis of non-beverage hollow plastic packaging from MSW regarding product residues and packaging characteristics. In Proceedings SARDINIA 2023. 19th International Symposium on Waste Management, Resource Recovery and Sustainable Landfilling (SARDINIA 2023), Santa Margherita Di Pula, Cagliari, Italy. This study investigates residue and dirt contents of non-beverage hollow plastic packaging from mixed municipal solid waste and separately collected lightweight packaging waste. Hand sorting analysis and determination of gross and net weight was conducted with 1,841 pieces of the targeted fraction. Results found higher residue and dirt content levels in packaging disposed of in mixed municipal solid waste (15.4%) than in separately collected lightweight packaging waste (10.7%). Packaging for food and cosmetics showed the highest levels among all product categories. Data like this is not only important for assessing the recyclability of packaging but also for calculation of waste management performance indicators.
