Feichtinger, G., Grass, D., & Seidl, A. (2023, November 9). When are research careers successful or not [Presentation]. Workshop der GOR Arbeitsgruppe Simulation und Optimierung komplexer Systeme 2023, Ingolstadt, Germany.
In this presentation a life cycle model for the development of scientic careers is analyzed by using optimal control theory. Recognizing that reputation has a positive impact on the efficiency in producing scientific knowledge, history-dependent career trajectories may occur.
In particular, our goal is to identify driving factors behind a
successful academic career. Moreover, aspects of research funding are discussed in the context of cooperation and networking.
■ How can a young scientist assess her/his chances for a scientific career?
■ Reasons for a bright scientific career: inspiration, transpiration, cooperation, networking?
■ How should an evaluation committee take into consideration disparities in scientific production of candidates for a position?
■ How to deal with a slump in scientific production (“midlife crisis”)?
