Abstract:
In 1997, two original cassettes from Camillo Sitte‘s original collection – among other documents – arrived at the Institute, which are the subject of Stefan Kubin‘s research as the so-called “Konvolut Knab-Stokreiter“. This paper discusses the most recent results of this debate. For example, it was possible to prove that the materials are the basis for the continuation of the book “City Planning According to Artistic Principles“ by Camillo Sitte. This announced sequel with the title “City Planning according to its Scientific and Social “was never published after Sitte‘s sudden death in 1903 and has since been considered lost.
The - or rather - the different concepts of the work planned by Camillo Sitte cover a broad spectrum of topics that depict numerous aspects of recent urban planning.
The “Konvolut Knab-Stokreiter“ contains a loose collection of notes, concise text modules or text fragments that open up some room for interpretation. Included are photographs, newspaper clippings, folding plans and hand sketches, all arranged thematically in small folding folders. The individual sheets of the collection are not dated themselves; in many cases, approximate dating is only possible via the source references they contain.
In some cases, sources could be specifically identified: for example, the historian Ernst Curtius (1814–1896), the architects Josef Stübben (1845–1936), Karl Henrici (1842–1927), Camille Martin (1877–1928) and Hans Christian Nussbaum (1853–1928). Otto Ammon (1842–1916), Georg Hansen (1852–1901) and Robert Rene Kuczynski (1876–1947) belong to the field of economics and statistics.
In addition to the fragmentary framework for the continuation volume of “City Planning According to Artistic Principles“, the real special feature of the “Konvolut Knab-Stokreiter“ is the opportunity to gain insight into a very early stage of Camillo Sitte‘s text production, which is only partially preserved in his other
publications. On the basis of selected sheets, this working method of Camillo Sitte can be demonstrated: he summarises the passages relevant to him, alternating between quotation and interpretation of the texts.
Although the “Konvolut Knab-Stokreiter“ does not contain a fully formulated manuscript, the sheets discussed here allow – with regard to the source references identified so far and the editing still in progress – a rudimentary reconstruction of the subsequent volume “City Planning according to its Scientific and Social Principles“.
