dc.description.abstract

In rivers, deadwood plays an essential ecological role in preserving morphological and species diversity. When it comes to river restoration efforts, the installation of stationary trees with upstream-facing root plates provides a means to increase the presence of deadwood in rivers. However, the effects of these structures on the temporal evolution of riverbed morphology, depending on their distance from the riverbed, have been relatively under explored and weretherefore systematically investigated in this study using sediment flume experiments. For this laboratory experiments, trees were idealized as a circular plate (root plate) and a circular cylinder (stem). Both the tree (stem with root plate) and root plates alone (without the stem) were examined in floating and near-bed positions. The study focused on the differences and impacts on the temporal development of pools and dunes, considering the stem and the two different installation heights. To achieve this, regular morphological laser scans of the flume bed were conducted from the beginning of each trial. These scans were processed into surface models and analyzed using color contour plots and vertical longitudinal profiles. This approach enabled us to illustrate the development of main pools and dunes around and downstream of the root plate. The most significant disparities in terms of pool depth, location, shape, dunes height, location, and shape were observed between near-bed and floating installations. The stem, on the otherhand, had little influence on the pools and dunes downstream of the structure and had no impacton pool formation upstream of the root plate.
