Abstract: 
This paper deals with extending the limited dynamic range of SDR-based pre-compliance measurement equipment. The proposed concept to achieve this is a feed-forward automatic gain control (AGC), which avoids clipping by timely switching on an attenuator in the RF path. The authors describe necessary considerations that have to be taken for a successful implementation and propose a method for equalizing the attenuated signal in the digital domain. Measurements on an actual implementation of the feed-forward AGC were conducted and prove the feasibility of the concept with amplitude errors being below 0.9 dB compared to a measurement without AGC. The dynamic range is pushed by more than 14 dB, when the AGC is incorporated in the measurement.
