Rüger, B. (2023). Vehicle Interiors - Efficiency Through Customer Orientation. In Proceedings Vol II : 26th International Conference Current Problems in Rail Vehicles : Prorail 2023 (pp. 215–224).
In modern rail vehicles, attempts are often made to increase efficiency and thus revenue by maximising the number of seats. However, this leads to a significant reduction in customer comfort and even efficiency due to various factors. The lecture will describe the following paradox in more detail: A maximum number of seats installed leads in reality to fewer available seats and, in addition to decreasing comfort and increasing dissatisfaction among passengers, to significantly longer stopping times. All this means both declining operational quality and efficiency and, in addition to higher energy consumption, rising costs. With well-designed vehicle layouts , on the other hand, it is possible to simultaneously increase customer satisfaction and efficiency with a high degree of utilisation, significantly improve operational processes and save costs as well as energy!
