dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
Despite the fast progress in the application of modern adhesives used, e.g., for face sheet adhesions in door panels, there still exists no standardized scheme for the strength prediction of thin layered adhesively bonded joints. Often, however, a design calculation for adhesive bonds is required in order to prove their strength. The aim of this study is to model adhesively bonded joints using cohesive zone modelling, in the context of the finite element method. For characterizing the material parameters of an epoxy-based adhesive required for the cohesive zone model, four independent experiments are performed, namely Thick Adherend Tensile Test, Thick Adherend Shear Test, Tapered Double Cantilever Beam-Test (TDCB-Test) and End-Notched Flexure-Test (ENF-Test). The aim of these tests is the determination of the strengths and critical strain energy release rates of the adhesive for mode I and mode II crack opening, respectively. Furthermore, the fracture surfaces are examined in detail. Additionally, artificially aged specimens are tested to characterize the aging behavior. Since not all tests are standardized for metal-metal adhesive bonds, pre-studies are performed for the TDCB- and ENF-Tests, respectively. These pre-studies are based on cohesive parameters of comparable epoxy-based adhesives found in the literature. The obtained parameters for the investigated adhesive are compared to those of similar adhesives found in the literature. The adhesive in its non-aged state shows intermediate strength and high fracture toughness under mode I and mode II crack opening. The aged adhesive shows a significant decrease in maximum strength and an increase in fracture toughness under mode I loading. The fracture surfaces indicate that the adhesive in its non-aged state results in cohesive failure while the aged adhesive results in a mix of cohesive and adhesive failure. The fracture surfaces are also used to draw conclusions about the crack opening mode and the crack propagation speed. With the parameters obtained, a good agreement between simulation and the experiment is obtained for the TDCB- and ENF-test. However, for a more comprehensive evaluation of the determined adhesive parameters, further comparisons between simulation and experiment are necessary for independent tests.
