What caused contemporary One Family Homes to evolve and why the title (H)ausbau? Despite the climate crisis, the dream of "building houses" prevails in Austria and other countries in the western world. This master thesis examines how detached houses can be seen as an architecture of expansion. Architecture that is in a constant state of change and is conceived as part of a cycle. Throughout history, stages in the development of the modern detached house can be identified. Stages of development which show interesting connections between certain typologies and the society. Nowadays, the dream of a detached house is characterised by values in society that create needs in people and vice versa. The image of a house and a garden embodies a life scenario associated with social prestige. This project tries to engage with this desire and thereby with Architecture as a Garden and a Garden as Architecture. A House as a garden that is undergoing change, driven by the living and non-living co-creators as inhabitants of this garden. The people who inhabit such a “growing” house act as gardeners who can influence their immediate environment, in harmony with the cycles of the plants and animals of the garden. The aim is to design a post-capitalist one family home.
