Industrially applicable modelling strategies for the prediction of the vibro-acoustic behaviour

Abstract

Studying vibro-acoustic behaviour of structures and machines is necessary for many branches of industry to limit the undesirable noise emission. The computer aided modelling of vibro-acoustics offers many benefits for industry by simplifying research and development, and reducing the need for expensive prototyping and measurements. This thesis presents modelling strategies for the prediction of vibro-acoustic behaviour using the finite element method. The theoretical foundations of the vibro-acoustics modelling, including governing equations and coupling conditions, are discussed brie y and their practical application in industrial projects is presented. The challenges encountered in large-scale vibro-acoustic simulations, such as identification of the noise sources, accurate modelling of complex excitation, simulating acoustics over a wide frequency range, and trade-o between the results accuracy and computation time are discussed. Possible solutions are presented based on two industrial projects. In the first considered project the vibrations and acoustics of a gearbox are modelled, with the purpose of studying the impact of gear geometry on the emitted noise. The second presented project focuses on the vibro-acoustic behaviour of a single-phase transformer and investigating several noise mitigation methods, including damping panel and changes to constructive parameters of the structure. For both projects the necessary simplifications and modelling assumptions are discussed in detail, the simulation work ow is documented and the results are analysed and evaluated. For the transformer project the validation of the model with measurement data is provided and reveals a good qualitative match between the simulation and real structure. The modelling approaches used in both projects are summarized and their advantages and limitations are discussed.

Die Untersuchung der Vibroakustik von Strukturen und Maschinen ist für viele Industriezweige notwendig, um die unerwünschte Lärmemission zu reduzieren. Die computergestützte Modellierung der Vibroakustik bietet viele Vorteile für die Industrie, indem sie Forschung und Entwicklung vereinfacht und den Bedarf an teuren Prototypen und Messungen verringert. In dieser Arbeit werden Modellierungsstrategien für die Vorhersage der Vibroakustik mit Hilfe der Finite-Elemente-Methode vorgestellt. Die theoretischen Grundlagen der vibroakustischen Modellierung, einschließlich der beschreibenden Gleichungen und Kopplungsbedingungen, werden kurz erörtert und ihre praktische Anwendung in Industrieprojekten vorgestellt. Die Herausforderungen, die sich bei groß angelegten vibroakustischen Simulationen stellen, wie z. B. die Identifizierung der Geräuschquellen, die genaue Modellierung komplexer Erregungen, die Simulation der Akustik über einen breiten Frequenzbereich und der Kompromiss zwischen der Genauigkeit der Ergebnisse und der Berechnungszeit, werden erörtert. Mögliche Lösungen werden anhand von zwei Industrieprojekten vorgestellt. Im ersten Projekt werden die Schwingungen und die Akustik eines Getriebes modelliert, um den Einfluss der Getriebegeometrie auf die Geräuschemission zu untersuchen. Das zweite Projekt befasst sich mit dem vibroakustischen Verhalten eines Einphasentransformators und der Untersuchung verschiedener Methoden zur Geräuschminderung, einschließlich Dämpfungsplatten und Änderungen der konstruktiven Parameter der Struktur. Für das zweite Projekt wird eine Validierung des Modells mit Messdaten vorgelegt, die eine gute qualitative Übereinstimmung zwischen der Simulation und der tatsächlichen Transformer zeigt. Die in beiden Projekten verwendeten Modellierungsansätze werden zusammengefasst und ihre Vorteile und Grenzen werden diskutiert.
