Abstract:
The last two decades have seen exponential growth in the use of swellable seals in applications such as open-hole completions, multi-zone stimulation, cement replacement and water management. Swell packers are self-actuated (they swell upon absorbing the fluid present in the well, either oil-based or water-based), and their reliability is high because there are no moving parts. In this paper, we describe a novel reactive water swellable technology platform where the material both swells and stiffens upon water intake, resulting in outstanding sealing ability.
