The thesis is about the design of a floating park based on the international competition called “Play the Future: WOW Floating Park”. The project location is in the city of Lugano (political municipality in the Lugano district of the Swiss canton of Ticino) and is located on Lake Lugano, exactly where the area in front of Piazza Bernardino Luini is. Recent demographic studies show that Lugano is experiencing a depopulation of the central experienced areas. In recent ye¬ars, especially after the pandemic, the need for urban open spaces has grown for individuals to improve physical and mental well-being, spend time outdoors and reconnect with nature. The project is looking for solutions that not only use the city itself, but also the lake and present it as an extension of the city center, creating an outdoor area that can be experienced in order to repopulate the city. The ultimate goal was to improve the environment and urban life of Lugano residents by thinking deeply about how to reconnect the city with the lake, starting from a thorough analysis of urban mobility and the lakefront and then the Conversion of the lake into an urban space. The history of architecture has always been marked by experimen¬tation with innovative housing solutions, looking for new ways to inhabit and experience the nature around us, adapting both to the needs of society and to changes in the environmental context. Floating architecture responds to the problem of climate change, the environmental impacts of urbanization, but also to new social needs.
