Die Menschheit steht heutzutage vor einer Vielzahl an Herausforderungen: Die anhaltende Urbanisierung übt weltweit Druck auf Städte aus, und die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf die Umwelt scheinen von Jahr zu Jahr extremer zu werden, während immer mehr Menschen sich mit psychischen Problemen konfrontiert sehen. All diese Probleme scheinen recht neu zu sein, was bei manchen vielleicht die Frage aufwirft, ob wir Menschen uns angesichts all dieser "modernen" Probleme mittlerweile sehr von unseren urzeitlichen Vorfahren unterscheiden, und wenn ja, wie? Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde sich mit den Fragen befasst, wo die Parallelen und Veränderung zur Urzeit in unserem heutigen Wohnverhalten liegen, und ob Zusammenhänge zwischen unseren Miet-, Kauf-, aber auch stadtplanerischen Entscheidungen bestehen. Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen wurden Fallbeispiele urzeitlicher Behausungen, primär auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Österreichs und der britischen Inseln, aber auch die Wiener Gründerzeithäuser betrachtet, und aktuelle Trends bezüglich Wohnen, Stadtplanung, und Lebensstil festgestellt, und mithilfe der Maslowschen Bedürfnishierarchie und Erkenntnissen aus der Wohnpsychologie untersucht. Schließlich wurden aus dem Vergleich der urzeitlichen Behausungen mit den Wiener Gründerzeithäusern und den aktuellen Trendentwicklungen Schlussfolgerungen gezogen. Diese Arbeit kommt zu dem Fazit, dass klare Parallelen im Verhalten und in den Präferenzen zwischen der heutigen Bevölkerung und den Menschen der Urzeit bestehen. Zudem lässt sich feststellen, dass viele der heutigen Trends ihre Wurzeln in der menschlichen Evolution haben und stark mit dem Bedürfnis nach Sicherheit und der aktuellen Klimakrise in Verbindung stehen.
