Abstract:
One of the dominant maintenance strategies in the pharmaceutical industry follows a time-based approach, where equipment is replaced at fixed intervals regardless of its true condition. This approach can result in unplanned downtime due to failures or inefficiency due to premature replacements. In addition, current solutions fail to utilise the latest technologies and models and do not address the specifics of the 24-hour pharmaceutical production industry. This thesis addresses these gaps and presents a novel concept for a more sophisticated, data-driven, prescriptive maintenance strategy for 24-hour pharmaceutical production. During the development process, using the Design Science Research Methodology for Information Systems by Peffers et al. (2007), the existing prescriptive maintenance model of Ansari et al. (2019) is extended and the applicability is demonstrated with a use case using a chromatography machine as an example. Within the use case, a data management layer is established to serve the predictive tools of a fault detection system using outlier detection and a survival analysis method using the Kaplan-Meier estimator. The final results derived from a simulation show that the application of the novel model has the potential to save 58% of the maintenance costs by reducing the number of maintenance activities performed by 66% and at the same time preventing 58% of the maintenance related failures.
